More about Larry H:"Signa engineer Larry Flak dies in Louisiana boating accident
By Patrick Reynolds of Signa Engineering Corp.
HOUSTON â Signa Engineering Corp. was notified at 1:09 p.m. on May 21, 2009, that Lawrence H. âLarryâ Flak, P.E., a world-renowned drilling & well control engineering expert, died in a tragic boating accident in south Louisiana. Larry, 54, a resident of Conroe, was killed along with four others on board a 24-foot boat in Falgout Canal near Houma.
All five men were entered in the Houma Oilmanâs Invitational Fishing Tournament. The Associated Press identified the other victims as: Michael J. Carrere age 43, of the Bayou Blue area in Louisiana; Carey J. Meche age 52, of Metarie, Louisiana; Rene J. Gauthier age 59 of Houston, Texas; and William Voss age 49, of Katy, Texas.
Larry was a Senior Technology Engineer for Signa Engineering Corp. and was responsible for unconventional drilling design and advanced well control techniques. Larry was regarded around the globe as a leading well control expert and spent much of his life battling well blowouts and oil fires. He was a registered petroleum engineer and a 1977 graduate of Texas A&M University.
âAnyone who knew Larry knew his rich and colorful history,â said Signa President Robert G. âBobâ Davis. âHe is well recognized throughout our industry for his accomplishments. He will be missed greatly by the oil and gas industry, and also by everyone at Signa Engineering Corp.â
During his 30-year career, Larry oversaw some of the worldâs largest and most threatening well control incidents, including the Kuwaiti Oil fires of 1991. During that time, Larry was serving as project manager for the Kuwait Oil Company and managed a 28-team staff that controlled 732 Kuwaiti blowouts, approximately 600 of which were on fire.
From 1992 to 2004, Larry worked for Boots & Coots, where he managed a four-team staff of engineers and blowout prevention/oil fighting in Iraq. He also prepared a Casing Drilling manual for BPâs first use of this technology in the Wamsutter Field of Wyoming, which specifically addressed contingency plans and well control safety aspects of Casing Drilling.

endents, and taught cross-industry safety training presentations. In 1997, he patented the âDynamic Freezeâ process (U.S. Patent No. 5,649,594: Method and Apparatus for Servicing a Wellhead Assembly, Flak, L. H. and Tuppen, J.). This invention won BP Chairmanâs Award for excellent application success in Sharjah, UAE.
Larry was a deepwater specialist and developed deepwater studies involving well control, risk management and gas hydrate control. He authored five articles on deepwater subjects. He is credited with developing a strategy to invert the lowest VBR in subsea BOPs to isolate sheared pipe from annulus and to facilitate BOP testing.
Larry audited deepwater well plans and rig sites for risk, contingency plans and coherence (such as the interrelation between pore pressure prediction, mud selection, casing design and cementing). He was also part of the team that developed the acclaimed IADC/OOC Deepwater Well Control Guidelines.
Larryâs passion for offshore fishing was as renowned as his firefighting, as can be seen in a recent photo (above left). âI love fishing in six inches to six thousand feet of saltwater,â Larry said only a few short months ago.
Larry attended schools in Houston and Richmond, Texas before moving to Richardson, Texas prior to his senior year. He graduated from Richardson High School in 1974. He began his distinguished career in the oilfield industry as a drilling engineer with Arco Alaska and later for Arco in its offices in Midland and Houston. Larry was a registered professional engineer and trained under W.C. Goins, a leading pioneer in modern well control, when he worked for OâBrien Goins & Simpson (OGE).
Larry took great pride in being a native Houstonian, an Aggie and a committed Parrothead, his family members said.
"He had a great joy for life and an incurable penchant for adventure. You would hear Larry before you ever saw him," family members said in a statement.
"Larry and his younger brother Ricky were well known as being quite the pranksters growing up and that didnât change as Larry grew older. Every day was a great day for Larry, especially if he got to go fishing, an activity he took up about eight years ago."
âWe will all miss Larry very much,â said Bob Davis. âLarry was a larger-than-life individual who will be remembered for his unconventional mindset and proactive engineering within our industry.â
Deana Humphries Flak is Larry's widow.
